Numerical Simulation of Shear Bands

Using numerical simulations of convex polygons with a method of discrete elements in two dimensions, we analyse different types of shear bands (Couette-cell, uniaxial compression, shear between two stiff plates and plane stress with boundaries moving at constant velocities). We obtain density, velocity and rotation profiles, the statistics of contacts, the evolution of the fabric tensor, the histogram of velocities etc. that give insight into the rheological properties of the shear band. A statistical argument gives an estimate on the width of the shear band in terms of grain diameters.
