The SINTEF/Seismics and Formation Physics is a department of the research institute SINTEF Petroleum Research and specializes in research in petroleum related rock mechanics and seismics. The institute provides contract research, development and consultancy services world wide within petroleum exploration and production technology.

There is a close collaboration between SINTEF Petroleum Research and the other institutes within the SINTEF Group and the Norwegian University of Science and Technology (NTNU) in particular with the Department of Petroleum Technology & Applied Geophysics, and the Department of Physics, with scientists and academic personnel cooperating in research projects and sharing laboratory facilities and equipment. The NTNU/Department of Petroleum Technology & Applied Geophysics runs an educational program in petroleum technology, including an international MSc program.

Research is conducted in areas of seismics, formation evaluation, drilling, reservoir and production engineering. The SINTEF/Seismics and Formation Physics and NTNU/Department of Petroleum Technology & Applied Geophysics, and Department of Physics have been awarded a strong point center status within SINTEF and NTNU. The SINTEF/Seismics and Formation Physics and NTNU/Department of Physics have been awarded a strong point center status within the SINTEF Group.
